| The Leading Edge September 2010 |
"Leadership Huntington is about vision and making dreams happen. There was kindness, hope, friendship and a deeper meaning of community instilled in the participants. Now more than ever I want to be involved and know that I can and will make a difference in the community" - JoAnn Barrett, Interfaith Minister, Class of 2003 |
Thank you, Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce!
85 years ago, the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce (HTCC) set out on a mission to promote business, economic development and job creation. The Chamber serves its members through government advocacy, networking, community development, research and education.
In 1995, the Huntington Township Chamber Foundation together with support from the HTCC created Leadership Huntington in a joint venture to act as a catalyst to identify, coordinate, and initiate projects to positively impact the local economy and quality of life. Leadership itself "graduated" to become an independent 501(c)3 organization in 2007. We remain most grateful for the Chamber's continuing support of our program.
Support from the Chamber empowered the Foundation to advance other major projects as well, such as establishing two model child care centers, work with Huntington Hospital to form the Dolan Family Health Center for the medically under-served, an eldercare project, and "WorkPlus" which addressed issues resulting from legislated welfare reform. The Huntington Community Council, a joint initiative with Leadership Huntington, serves local nonprofits.
For this, and everything else the Chamber does -- THANKS!!!
One of the Chamber's most entertaining proects is the LI Fall Festival, coming to Heckscher Park October 8-11. Read more below!!! |

Thank You for a Great Evening with Craig Rider!!!
On September 22nd, over 45 Leadership Graduates came together for a reunion with longtime friend and master facilitator, Craig Rider. Craig is a nationally renowned consultant in Leadership and Team Building, and coauthor of "300 Bucks and a Dream." He has been with Leadership since 1995.
For most graduates, the opening and closing retreats facilitated by Craig offered the most powerful experiences in the program. We were delighted to share this fun and provocative evening. It truly lived up to it's billing of stimulating memories, renewing friendships, and bringing the Leadership Huntington experience to life. Thank you for joining us!
Not only did we laugh and learn, but our Grads offered valuable insight into how Leadership can better reach and engage it's ever-growing community. Be on the lookout for great opportunities to come!!!

Three individuals and three organizations were recently honored by the natural gas vehicle industry for their efforts to advance the development of natural gas vehicles in the United States. One of them happened to be Ron Gulmi, Manager, Product Management-Transportation, for National Grid and proud member of Leadership Class of 2010
The 2010 National NGV Achievement Awards were presented by NGVAmerica and the Clean Vehicle Education Foundation, two organizations dedicated to increasing the use of natural gas vehicles to improve air quality, lessen dependence on foreign oil and reduce fleet operator costs.

In Gratitude for the Grads who Keep on Giving
One of the best parts of running the Leadership Flagship program is the opportunity to bring graduates into the curriculum. Each one brings unique skills, insights and interests. Among the many varied and valued contributions, one of most touching for us occurred this year -- Jim Ryan, Class of 2002, brought proof of how his Leadership experience continues to directly enrich his own life.
At the recent Skills Workshop, Jim shared his personal story as an alumni who was inspired by the curriculum to set goals and "follow his bliss." After all these years, he still uses those goals (pictured above) to encourage his clients to seek out and live their own passion.

Among other great experiences with Leadership grads was visiting the Northport Power Plant with Plant Supervisor Bob DeMoustes, Class of 2008. Recalling another class, Mark McAteer, Class of 2010, recently chided H2M engineer Steve Hearl, Leadership Board Member, Class of 2003 for bringing Leadership through the sewage treatment plant in July. It was a good-natured tease; one that made it very clear that everyone learned a great deal from Steve's knowledgeable tour, and valued the experience highly, despite the aroma.
"It is a great privilege to work with these folks and to watch them evolve into more confident, more skilled, more aware leaders in the community," reflects Curriculum Chair Trudy Fitzsimmons, "2010 has been a fabulous experience and a fabulous class. I look forward to the fabulous things to come."
The class of 2010 has completed its closing retreat! Thank you, Verizon for enabling us to host Craig! Thank you, Nat Grid for your warm hospitality! They hope you join us in celebrating a great year at the Leadership Gala. We will also be honoring great folks who made their experience possible and who continue to live the mission of Leadership throughout Long Island and beyond!

Help Local Solutions Grow
Leadership Huntington is committed to fostering "organically grown local solutions." Check here for a sampling of local opportunities to get involved, or send us your own to share!
Unity in the Community Leadership has been working with the Huntington Awareness Community Partnership in planning the Unity in the Community Parade and Fair. We are also a proud sponsor.
The day is chaired by Huntington Station Enrichment Center Director and Leadership President's Council member Dolores Thompson, community activist Al White and Huntington Town Supervisor Frank Petrone. Over 30 community groups are working together to bring this day to fruition
"This will be truly a great day for Huntington Station and the entire Town, as we highlight all that is good in the community and celebrate what the community has to offer," said Supervisor Petrone.
This First Annual "Unity in the Community Day" gets underway October 2nd with a parade starting at 10 a.m. along New York Avenue in Huntington Station. Bands, floats, vintage cars, service groups and local merchants will join the march from West Hills Road to Church Street, ending at a festival in the municipal parking lot between Railroad Street and Lowndes Avenue.
For more information, please contact Dolores Thompson at 631-425-2540, huntsec@aol.com. The Wall, a three-quarter-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington D.C., has been touring the nation since 1990. This 240-foot long, eight-foot high, faux-granite replica contains the names of more than 58,000 Americans who died or are missing in Vietnam. To see the memorial, to touch it and experience its magnitude offers unforgettable moments of reflection and healing to thousands of visitors. The Town is seeking volunteers to assist with tasks including setup, hospitality, security and dismantling. The Town is also seeking sponsors who can help defray some of the costs of bringing the Wall to Huntington. Interested persons should contact Stephen Jimenez (Class of 2008) at 631-351-3171.
